In 1956 Borner manufactured an onion cutter made of a piece of wood with four blades. Today the Borner products have evolved into a must have line of slicers from the V-Slicer Pro to the Combi-Chef and Veg’ Art Prep Tool. Borner products help add creativity to any gourmet meal. All Borner products are made in Germany.

With this slicer you can julienne, slice, shred, and make very delicate cuts for your meats, salad toppings, soups as well as many others. Model V-1001
# The original V-Blade is engineered with precision German technology and crafted from the most durable stainless steel
# Mulit-function bowl with lid for safely storing all parts or catching all sliced fruits and vegetables
# Blade insert holder for storing blades safely when not in use
# Use the two blade inserts (7 mm and 3.5 mm) to achieve your desired julienne, shred or cube cut. Attain 3 precision thicknesses with the slicing insert
# The V-Slicer Pro blades are very sharp so be sure to use the included safety holder at all times to ensure safe and easy use
# Made of tough ABS plastic for added durability
This an inexpensive alternative to a professional stainless-steel mandoline, this device makes it possible to quickly, uniformly, and safely slice and julienne vegetables and fruits. It also shreds cabbage and neatly dices potatoes, tomatoes, and onions. For safety, a holder firmly grips food with stainless-steel prongs so fingers are protected from the German surgical-steel blades, and the three inserts accompanying the device lock in position. The inserts act as a guide for slicing against the V-frame’s knife that reverses to create slices either 1/4-inch or 1/16-inch thick and two julienne inserts for creating 1/8-inch or 3/8-inch strips. For storage, the V-frame, all three inserts, and the safety holder fit into a caddy that can stand upright on the counter, lie flat in a drawer, or hang on the wall. Made of rugged plastic, the device measures 15 inches long and 6 inches wide when assembled for storage.
Norpro Bread Slicer with Crumb Catcher
by ruben17 on Nov.02, 2009, under Bread slicer, Product Review
Only two things could be adjusted for me to like this bread slicer better. 1 – the grooves could be deeper to keep from slicing into the wood. 2 – the guide could be adjustable. Other than that, it is a handy tool to use with baked bread. We use a bread machine that makes a pound and a half loaf. Norpro Bread Slicer with Crumb Catcher has really removed the guess work of slicing. The bread should be cooled a little before attempting to slice. We often take bread to functions and using Norpro Bread Slicer with Crumb Catcher we now have nice even slices. It is a lot neater using it rather than a plain board, too. All in all, a great kitchen aide.
Behold the Norpro Bread Slicer with Crumb Catcher:
* Slicing rack measures 6-3/4 by 6-1/2 by 12-1/2 inches
* Generous slicing surface accommodates any size loaf
* Handsome hardwood crumb catcher steadies the unit and protects counters and tabletops
* Acrylic slicing guides ensure uniform ½-inch slices
* Easy cleanup; simply dump the crumbs the from crumb catcher

Microplane 47001 Adjustable Slider Food Slicer
by ruben17 on Nov.02, 2009, under Food slicer, Product Review
I’ve tried several mandolines–from the top-of-the-line unit to an inexpensive, but highly rated V-slicer, and another handheld. I sent the former back, gave the V-slicer away and the handheld broke. None of them served my purpose. All the blade changing and/or adjusting with the stationary mandolines was awkward and a lot of trouble considering I wasn’t cooking for a restaurant–I just wanted to make salads for one or two, or a variety of other things, but usually in rather small quantities. Microplane 47001 Adjustable Slider Food Slicer is perfect. Now I can slice a leek, a carrot and part of a cucumber directly onto my salad in seconds. I can slice beets or other veggies very quickly and conveniently directly into the pot. The large knob on the bottom of Microplane 47001 Adjustable Slider Food Slicer turns easily to create the desired slice thickness and a quick swish and rinse leaves it clean for the next time. I get high-end mandoline quality slices from the super sharp blade, but without all the set up and clean up time. Microplane 47001 Adjustable Slider Food Slicer is sturdy and reliable. I couldn’t be happier with my purchase. With Microplane 47001 Adjustable Slider Food Slicer, my fruit and vegetable ingredients look professionally prepared and are done in a flash.
Behold the Microplane 47001 Adjustable Slider Food Slicer:
* Hardened, stainless-steel V-blade effortlessly slices cheese, fruit, and vegetables
* Dial adjusts blade to create paper thin slices and up to 1/4-inch slices
* Ergonomic soft-touch handle, and non-slip feet add stability
* Included food holder grips food and protects hands while slicing
* Dishwasher safe

Chef’s Choice 610 Electric Food Slicer
by ruben17 on Oct.28, 2009, under Electric slicer, Food slicer, Product Review

We’ve been curing a lot of our own meat for a number of years now. It tastes great, but slicing it all up for storage has always been a bit of a chore. This summer we developed a slight addiction to BLTs made with cottage bacon. At 8 bucks a pound, my dear wife offered that if I made our own bacon she’d get me an electric slicer.
Behold the Chef’s Choice 610 Premium Electric Food Slicer.
* Food carriage is large and tilted so that slicing goes pretty quickly.
* All the parts (blade, food carriage, food pusher, food deflector, and thickness guide) of this electric slicer come off for easy cleaning.
* 7-inch blade slices cleanly from deli-thin to 1-inch thick slices
* High-torque motor handles hard foods and big slices.

So far I’ve run 14 pounds of cottage bacon, several sticks of pepperoni, and a load of zucchini through it and it has handled it with this electric slicer all like a champ – nice even slices with no tearing. Some of the slices of bacon were a good 7 inches long, but the motor of this Electric Food Slicer never slowed down.
It cuts very quickly and the feed is real smooth, so make sure to use the guard and food pusher. I ran both pork butts through it in under 5 minutes.
All the moving parts come off for cleaning (I put them in the top basket of the dishwasher even though the manual says not to), and the then you just have to wipe down the body.
If we had a little more counter space I’d even consider leaving it out as an alternative to a box slicer or mandolin.

5 Minute Recipe with Electric Slicer
by ruben17 on Oct.28, 2009, under Tips

I got recipe from “Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day”. Most of the recipes in the book use white flour, BUT they just released their new book TODAY: “Healthy Bread in 5 Minutes a Day”. I ordered a copy on Amazon and will let you all know how I like it – supposedly, it has many recipes that use 100% whole grains.
I calculated that using all organic ingredients, raw honey, and raw milk this recipe comes out to less than $1 per loaf, with very little time or effort expended. Right now I am experimenting with using other grains, and adding sprouted wheat berries.
If you find yourself baking all or most of your family’s bread (as I have done consistently since discovering this recipe), you may want to invest in an electric slicer. I found several on amazon for $10-$30. You will be able to use the slicer for cutting meats and cheeses as well, which can help save money by buying in bulk.
How to Use a Tomato Slicer
by ruben17 on Oct.07, 2009, under Tips
There is nothing tastier than a fresh tomato in your salad, on your sandwich or added to your favorite recipe. However if you’ve ever tried to slice a tomato, you know that it can be difficult to get perfectly even slices. (Especially when you get to the end of a tomato.) So to make your life easier, and reduce the risky of accidentally cutting your fingers, use a tomato slicer.
Instructions
1. Wash your tomatoes and remove any stickers. Because you are going to be ingesting the skin of the tomato, you want to be sure to wash it in warm water thoroughly before using the slicer. Then pat dry with a paper towel.
2. Remove the stem of the tomato using a knife. Place the tomato on your cutting board and make a small circular incision around the core of the tomato stem. Once you’ve completed the circle the stem will remove easily.
3. Align your tomato with the slicer. There are two main types of tomato slicers that work using the same basic principle. A handheld tomato slicer, and a more industrial version that looks somewhat like a deli meat slicer. If you are using the handheld version, simply place the tomato slicer over the tomato on your cutting board to align. If you are using the more industrial version, place the tomato in the moon shaped guide.
4. Slice your tomato. If you are using the handheld version, simply press down firmly, and the sharp blades will travel right through the tomato. If you are using the industrial version, push the handle forward, which moves the moon shaped guide and presses the tomato through the blades.
