This an inexpensive alternative to a professional stainless-steel mandoline, this device makes it possible to quickly, uniformly, and safely slice and julienne vegetables and fruits. It also shreds cabbage and neatly dices potatoes, tomatoes, and onions. For safety, a holder firmly grips food with stainless-steel prongs so fingers are protected from the German surgical-steel blades, and the three inserts accompanying the device lock in position. The inserts act as a guide for slicing against the V-frame’s knife that reverses to create slices either 1/4-inch or 1/16-inch thick and two julienne inserts for creating 1/8-inch or 3/8-inch strips. I sent the former back, gave the V-slicer away and the handheld broke. None of them served my purpose. All the blade changing and/or adjusting with the stationary mandolines was awkward and a lot of trouble considering I wasn’t cooking for a restaurant–I just wanted to make salads for one or two, or a variety of other things, but usually in rather small quantities. We’ve been curing a lot of our own meat for a number of years now. It tastes great, but slicing it all up for storage has always been a bit of a chore. This summer we developed a slight addiction to BLTs made with cottage bacon. At 8 bucks a pound, my dear wife offered that if I made our own bacon she’d get me an electric slicer.

So far I’ve run 14 pounds of cottage bacon, several sticks of pepperoni, and a load of zucchini through it and it has handled it with this electric slicer all like a champ – nice even slices with no tearing. Some of the slices of bacon were a good 7 inches long, but the motor of this Electric Food Slicer never slowed down.

It cuts very quickly and the feed is real smooth, so make sure to use the guard and food pusher. I ran both pork butts through it in under 5 minutes.

All the moving parts come off for cleaning (I put them in the top basket of the dishwasher even though the manual says not to), and the then you just have to wipe down the body.

If we had a little more counter space I’d even consider leaving it out as an alternative to a box slicer or mandolin.
